OIL RETAINING RING
Technical description
The oil retaining ring is a precision-machined mechanical part made of 2C45 steel (medium-hard steel with medium carbon content, equivalent to C45 / EN 10083). It retains lubricant in bearings and roller bearings by means of a labyrinth effect, without direct contact with the rotating shaft — unlike flexible lip seals. The prescribed surface protection is degreasing and oiling (degrease and oil).
The part has an annular profile with a machined shoulder, tight tolerances (IT7 on the outer diameter of the housing, IT8 on the profile) and chamfered edges on all sides. The geometry of the inner groove creates a labyrinth effect that slows down the migration of oil to the outside without mechanical friction, thus reducing heat build-up and wear compared to a conventional lip seal.
Variations
The oil retention ring is available in different sizes depending on the application and equipment concerned. The standard version is made of 2C45 material. A stainless steel version can be considered for environments exposed to corrosion or high humidity. The labyrinth profile can also vary depending on the number of grooves specified in the manufacturer's plan.
Applications
In the railway sector, this ring is used for oil retention on traction motor shafts, bogie gearboxes and mechanical transmissions integrated into motor boxes. It ensures the dynamic sealing of rotating bearings without contact, making it particularly suitable for high-speed equipment and intensive operating cycles specific to railway traction.
It is also used on axle boxes, on-board compressors and any rotating equipment requiring long-lasting lubricant retention without frequent replacement.
